Online Marketing 101 – What is Marketing?

Online Marketing is the use of internet technology to spread brand messaging and capture new customers. This includes social media, digital ads and search engine marketing.

Most business people think of Marketing as advertising but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Marketing is a process that involves researching customer needs, translating them into product features and benefits, planning the production of those products, packaging those products for sale, pricing them to reflect the value to customers and promoting them to attract sales.

Many companies focus on one or more aspects of the marketing process but they don’t always do it well. For example, Krispy Kreme built a global brand on the back of its famous doughnuts and relying primarily on word-of-mouth marketing without any television or other traditional advertising. Salesforce does a great job of leveraging their content marketing strategy and paid advertising on LinkedIn to promote their software.

Paid advertising is any advertising that you pay to have appear on a website, in an app or on a social network. It can be in the form of an image ad, a video ad or even a carousel ad where you can display multiple messages to your audience at once. The important thing is to determine your objective for using paid advertising – awareness, consideration or conversion? Once you know what your goal is, the rest of the decision-making process is easy. Check out this article on LinkedIn to learn more about how you can create a successful LinkedIn campaign.
